Ella Mesma (UK)
Ella learnt salsa and samba in Leeds and Bristol before training in Brazil, New York (Lisa Ullman scholarship) and Cuba. She was selected as a Passista (1st soloist) in Rio Carnival in 2006. Ella became Rainha (Queen) of the London School of Samba in 2008. She has performed with artists including Sami (Salsa) Rodrigues, Richard Marcel, Iris De Brito, Circo Picolino, Escola de Samba Alegria de Zona Sul and Waldemar Cabral. She established Element Dance Company which explores the development of urban Latin styles and fusion, and won a category of the European Salsa Champions 2007.
Ella began breaking with B-Boys Attic (Birmingham) and has since trained with Full Circle (NYC), Kali crew and Soul Superior (London). Ella apprenticed with M and Em Dance Company in Leeds before moving to London to train in contemporary dance. She attended Laban for a year before studying for her diploma at The Place. She then took the lead role in a hip hop production of Romeo and Juliet.
Ella has worked for Uchenna Dance Company, Bricolage Dance Movement, Jonzi D and Jasmin Vardimon (Breakin' Convention), and Upswing Circus.
In 2011 Ella received Arts Council funding to create Evol, a piece exploring the concept of rape within relationships, which was developed as part of The Surgery and performed at Breakin' Convention 2011.
Ella joined Russell Maliphant Company in September 2011 and is currently on tour with the company performing in ‘The Rodin Project'. She will also be performing as part of the Opening Ceremony for the Olympics for Bgirl Sun Sun and Temujin Gill, and is interested in pursuing her own work as Ella Mesma Dance Company.
