Membros (Brazil)

This striking company of dancers brings a powerful physical narrative, portraying the damage from brutal social apartheid and corruption within inner-city Brazil. Fusing Hip Hop and physical theatre, their hard-hitting movements and strong imagery purposefully depict the destruction brought about through violence and drugs.

Membros was founded in Macaé (180km from Rio De Janeiro) in 1999 by the choreographer, Tais Vieira, and Paulo Azevedo, a lecturer in Political Science. The company was originally created from a project which united ten young people from various backgrounds and cultural horizons, with no previous contact with dance.
