Nene

Nehemiah Smith aka Nene is a born and bred Brummie!

Nene started dancing in early 2003, starting out as a street dancer at first and discovered b-boying six months later. During summer 2006 he helped start a local crew called MDK (Mad Dope Kru) who is still going on till this day. Whilst with MDK he competed in battles, winning their first battle in Coventry at Godiva Fest, later competing in the UK B-Boy Championships Qualifiers in London and shows for Red Bull and BBC Proms in 2010.

As a b-boy Nene has been around and competed in UK battles as solo as well where he won battles at Hardskool in Loughbrough 2006, Throwdown Tour 2011 in Nottingham and Birmingham and Gimme the Breaks in Birmingham. Nene continues to compete and loves to do it in his home town of Birmingham.

Through out the years he has dipped and dabbed in other projects to help develop his understanding of Hip Hop and one of which was Hip Hop Theatre where he got to perform TAG... Just Writing My Name in 2008 for Jonzi D Productions. Within that year he got to learn PlayBack Theatre with Baba Israel in Manchester for Breaking Cycles by Benji Reid where he got to experiment more of the elements of Hip Hop and use them, such as acting, MCing, beatbox, spoken word, dance and musical (instruments).

In 2009 he joined local Hip Hop collective Smash Bro'z who have performed at Breakin' Convention Birmingham in 2009 and was also a rep for Birmingham. He then went on to do other styles such as popping, locking, b-boying and house. Whilst in Smash Bro'z he went on to compete in the UK Hip Hop Championships in 2009 and came third place but then went on to win it in 2010 which gave them a chance to compete for the worlds in Las Vegas. In order to do this they had to do loads of performances for schools around the local area and companies to raise money which lead them into perfoming for companies such as Nintendo and Talk Talk and also landed a sponsorship with Reebok.

In between then and now Nene has been around the UK and abroad like France and Italy to seek knowledge meet and greet other Hip Hop heads to help the local kids coming onto the scene now.

Right now Nene is in no crew but reps Birmingham to the full and has to maintain his goal which is trying to help keep Hip Hop alive and well in Brum to help those that are hungry to learn and train HipHop and not just as a dance.

Nene is also a musician (drummer). Playing drums has helped him build himself in dance and has lead him to play for Benji Reid and Jonzi D for Soweto Kinch's LiveBox in Birmingham which is a live event with musicians, MCs, poets and actors to showcase their stuff. He still continues to play even though he has done loads of dancing over the years which has lead him not to play as much as he used to and you will have the chance to see and hear him play at this years Breakin' Convention 2012 in Birmingham.
