Be part of Future Elements Music Video 2018

Do you love watching the latest music videos? Breakin' Convention is offering you the chance to star in and create your very own music video for free.

Future Elements is looking for young aspiring dancers, film makers, MCs, graffiti artists, music producers, costume and set designers, aged 13-16 years.

Future Elements will give you the chance to work with some of London's most exciting Hip Hop artists including Breakin' Convention's very own Jonzi D.

Future Elements is FREE. To take part you must attend all of the following dates during February half term:

  • Sun 11th February – Fri 16th February
  • Sat 17th March 2018

The course will run from 10-4pm each day at Sadler's Wells Theatre, Islington.

The music video will be premiered as part of Future Elements Night on Saturday 17th March 2018.

What's Your Story? dramaturgy workshop

What's Your Story? An introduction to dramaturgy for hip hop theatre makers.

This three day course is a collaboration with Jonzi D (Breakin’ Convention Artistic Director) and Jane Fallowfield (Talawa’s Literary Associate)

What you will learn on this course:

  • Looking at yourself and your work: How do you articulate and interrogate your ideas? What is your process? How can you analyse what you are making and grow, shape and edit it?
  • Tools to help you step outside your work and see it clearly – a closer look at story, character and theatricality.
  • An introduction to working with text and working with writers.

Participants will also collaborate with three young exciting new voices from Talawa.

Course cost: £10
Registration AND payment is required to secure a place on the course.

About the mentors 

Jane Fallowfield

Jane is a director of new plays and Literary Associate at Talawa Theatre Company where she commissions and develops writers.  She has previously co-run workshops with Jonzi D bringing together writers and choreographers.

Jonzi D

A dancer, spoken word artist and director, he is the foremost advocate for hip-hop theatre who has changed the profile and influenced the development of the UK British hip-hop dance and theatre scene over the last two decades.

Since 2004 Jonzi D has been Artistic Director for Breakin' Convention and has triumphed in raising the profile and giving a platform to hip-hop disciplines, which has gained worldwide recognition as being at the vanguard of the development of the art form. Through professional development projects Open Art Surgery and Back To The Lab, Jonzi has supported hundreds of hip hop dance and rap/poetry artists on their journey to creating theatre.

Old's Kool hip hop course for older adults

Redbridge Drama Centre and Breakin' Convention present Old's Kool, a Sunday evening for older adults to participate in hip hop activities.

For 4 weeks, older adults can learn hip hop disciplines, with fun activities every Sunday led by experienced artists. First session free (Sunday 1 October), following sessions just £2!

The introduction week will include an introduction to rap and poetry from Ghetto Geek and dance from B-Girl Sun Sun.

Other weeks will range from: 
DJing - Practise mixing and scratching records
Dance - Learn basic choreography with light moves
Rap - Have a go and writing some rhymes and making a song
Graffiti - Learn a brief history of graffiti art and then having a go at stencilling and colouring then design on some of your own custom items.

All of our artist mentors are active in the UK Hip Hop scene with experience in teaching the arts from young people, SEN, to older adults.
