Sign your school up to Moving Rap 2

Posted: 11 December 2017

Following the success of “Moving Rap” last year, Breakin’ Convention is excited to return this project to East London again, with “Moving Rap 2”, funded by LLDC (London Legacy development Corporation).

Eight East London schools will be picked to take part in this exciting two month project, where your Key Stage 3 students experience and learn skills in merging lyrical skill and movement to create a piece of performance to perform at the Big Lunch on the Breakin' Convention stage in June 2018.

The project is weekly and takes place at your school, with two professional hip hop artists working with your young people in rap and dance.

Last year’s Moving Rap project was exciting, engaging and fun. With hip hop dance now sitting in the GCSE dance curriculum as well as rap extending the power of literacy, this project is both educational and loved by the students.

Breakin’ Convention is an international festival of hip hop dance theatre, based at Sadler’s wells Theatre in Islington. As well as touring worldwide, we specialise in hip hop education for young people and professional artist development, with a Hip Hop Academy opening in 2022 at the brand dew Sadler’s Wells Theatre on the Olympic Park. This project is a fantastic way to develop a relationship as well as present opportunities in arts and culture for your young people.

To apply for your school to be considered, please fill in this form by 10th January 2018. If your school is picked, we will perform a short assembly to give students more information on the project as up to 15 young people can represent for your school.

Please note that the school will need to be committed to the project and able to perform at The Big Lunch on 17 June.
Good luck and we look forward to the possibility of working with you!

Back to the Lab 2018

Posted: 06 December 2017

Back to the Lab is Breakin' Convention's choreographic course designed to explore new ways of approaching choreography, direction and staging to give you the means to approach your work from fresh and new angles without losing the essence of what you do. We are also offering one place to a choreographer from outside of the UK.

Breakin' Convention is proud to offer four hip hop choreographers a unique opportunity to go Back To The Lab. Participants, along with up to four of their own dancers, will work with dance heavyweights, Jonzi D, Breakin' Convention's artistic director, and Jonathan Burrows over two exciting weeks of mentoring, experimenting and devising.

The first week will involve Jonzi D and Jonathan Burrows introducing choreographers to the foundations of creating fresh, new, convention breaking work, while during week two participants will be joined by Ivan Blackstock and Anthony Ekundayo-Lennon who will shape work into a work in progress performance to be shown in front of an audience at the end of the week.
