Spend one week working with Jonzi D and Jane Sekonya, creating work before performing it in front of a live audience, then answer questions from the audience and get feedback on how to refine it further. Take your hip hop artistry and dare to do something new.
Participation is FREE.
What is Open Art Surgery?
Open Art Surgery is hip hop theatre dissected, examined and put under the microscope. It is about breaking down the fourth wall and showcasing raw talent and new work.
It offers hip hop theatre companies and performers, from dancers and musicians to emcees and visual artists, the opportunity to develop and experiment with new ideas, share new work publicly and receive mentorship from experienced hip hop theatre creators.
At the end of the week, participants share and discuss their work with a live performance hosted by Breakin’ Convention Artistic Director, Jonzi D. The audience is invited to question and critique the work, whilst the artists themselves have a unique opportunity to question the audience.
Work that has appeared at Open Art Surgery has gone on to be performed at The Place, Just Jam, Edinburgh Fringe and nationally and internationally as part of the Breakin' Convention International Festival of Hip Hop Dance Theatre.
Presented in partnership with Your Next Move
Access Budget
Breakin’ Convention is committed to ensuring that all artists can access the Open Art Surgery programme, regardless of their access requirements. To enable this, additional funds are available to support any access requirements for artists and their collaborators, including childcare costs.
We will endeavour to provide the support required and this will be agreed in conversation between the Artist and Breakin’ Convention once the opportunity is offered.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further please contact producer, Emma Ponsford, at emma@breakinconvention.com
