What we’re looking for

Guidelines

Breakin' Convention is on the look-out for artists, companies and crews that are daring, innovative and highly skilled in street dance techniques.

What we want to see:

  • SKILL: artists that demonstrate hip hop and street dance techniques at the highest level

  • CREATIVITY: artists that use street dance styles in exciting ways, to tell stories and share unique perspectives

  • INNOVATION: shows that push the boundaries of hip hop theatre through choreography, lighting, sound and more

  • RELEVANCE: concepts that reflect the world today

  • AMBITION: artists that are bold, who wish to take up space and help shape the future of hip hop theatre

REMEMBER: each year, the Breakin' Convention programme features a mix of established artists and new talent - so don’t count yourself out!

Since its inception, Breakin' Convention has presented a wide range of incredible acts that prove:

  • You don't need a large company to make a powerful piece - Kenrick 'H20' Sandy of Boy Blue (UK) premiered his solo show Mad World in 2008 and Storm in 2013;

  • You don't need an abstract concept – The Ruggeds (Netherlands) presented a show based on the subject of adrenaline in 2015;

  • You don't need big props – Birdgang (UK) only used a single table and chair for Vice in 2013;

  • You don’t need a neat storyline - Myosung (Korea) created an abstract and dystopian world with their 2009 piece, The Revolution Will Not Be Institutionalized;

  • You don’t need to think small - Hungry Sharks (Austria) utilised smartphone technology for live audience interaction within their piece #FOMO in 2017.

Start with your idea, stay true to yourself and dare to be different!
